Congratulations on an amazing season that culminated in straight superior ratings as well as straight A’s inside of those superiors!  Hard work and preparation pay off.  The blood, sweat, and tears at rehearsals become worth it at MPA and that is the magical thing about working really hard and sacrificing time and energy with a group of people who also sacrifice and work hard.  Each and every one of you contributes to our success.  Sit back and dwell on this for a little while.  Appreciate each other.  Appreciate what you’ve learned about yourself and most of all, recognize the value of working hard and investing in something that is bigger than yourself.  It’s very valuable and it’s also priceless.

Some of you have done this before, some for the first time… I hope you all see the value of marching band.  There really is nothing like it.

Do you know anyone that used to be in band and is interested in returning??  Send them to me and let’s bring them back!  We gained an oboe player last week who missed music and will join us at the semester change.  If their schedule allows it, students not currently enrolled can get back into band at the semester.  Have them see me!

Instructions for successful Smartmusic assessments:

  • ALWAYS practice the etude before you record
  • ALWAYS listen to your recording and evaluate it BEFORE you submit.  You can record something as many times as you like but once you record, it submits it to Ms. Chaffin
  • Ms Chaffin can listen to your recordings, if you submit a recording with poor tone, articulation, intonation etc, she may change your grade.  If you feel your recording is falsely read by smartmusic (which is rare), ask Ms. Chaffin to listen to your recording and if you are correct, she may change your grade.
  • If you are getting false reads ie. smartmusic says you are playing in a different octave etc – listen to your recording and decide for yourself what the issue is
    • also check your intonation on that pitch.
  • USE HEADPHONES when playing with accompaniment.  This prevents false reads in the grading.  It also improves intonation.
